Clean Air

Clean Air

Utah businesses know that clean air is important to our health, quality of life and economic well-being.  The Salt Lake Chamber, Utah’s largest statewide business association, embraces a clean air ethic that includes support for air quality initiatives led by others, public education campaigns focused on reducing auto emissions and promotion of responsible business practices that improve Utah’s air quality.  We also recognize our role to serve as the “voice of business” for this cause and will support necessary actions to clean our air.
Purpose and objectives
The Clean Air Champions will lead business efforts to improve Utah’s air quality.  Key objectives include the following:
  • Solidify business support for major air quality initiatives led by others. (Clear the Air Challenge, Idle-Free Campaign, EPA grants, NBS sustainability and climate change focus, etc.)
  • Serve as the “voice of business” for the need and necessary actions to clean our air.
  • Provide business leadership in motivating best business practices as it relates to clean air.
  • Focus on steps to limit auto emissions.
  • Engage with research universities to promote R&D

Work Plan
  1. Invite select business leaders participate in the Chamber’s air quality initiative
  2. Determine a date to host first meeting of select executives
  3. Draft and send an invitation from Lane to potential candidates
  4. Identify a potential meeting schedule for 2010.
  5. Call for support from the group of invitees and others in our business community to:
  6. Take a strong advocacy role in regard to sound clean air policies for Utah
  7. Promote best practices to other business leaders
  8. Encourage the reduction of auto emissions
  9. Develop a media strategy to deliver this group’s message to the general public
  10. Educate citizens on their own responsibility about driving and its impact on air quality
  11. Brand the message that this is “everyone’s” responsibility
  12. Share best practices from our own community
  13. Secure earned media
  14. Generate revenue for paid media

Desired Outcome
Through this initiative we intend to build public support for clean air in Utah, promote this as an economic development issue and identify the roles that both businesses and the public have in this important statewide issue.  We will do this by incorporating sound policy recommendations, amplifying the voice of business in regard to future air quality policies, generate a media campaign to promote everyone’s responsibilities and support existing programs to maximize the efficiency of the Chamber’s Clean Air Champions.
